The Little Russian Custom Combat Knife - 10-1/8" Overall

I call this “The Little Russian” just because it is the smallest of the three custom blades I just made.  It may be shorter than it’s bigger siblings but it is incredibly stout – I’m talking wickedly beefy.

This custom damascus tactical knife is done in my “post apocalyptic” style wherein it is intentionally made to look very utilitarian and rough and definitely not like something a factory would crank out though I do use modern materials.

The base Damascus blade was forged by V. Nazarov knives of Vorsma in the Pavlovsky District of Nizhny Novogord in Russia.  They use a high carbon Damascus steel that they make and is hardened to 62 HRC and per my request, is ¼” thick!  The blades are acid etched, coated with a boiled linseed oil mixture and then finally coated with oil.  The photos of the blades wherein they look “wet” are actually showing oil.

The scales of the handle are made from black canvas micarta which is shape by hand and affixed to the Damascus blade by Brownell’s Acrglas epoxy and 1/4” brass pins.

The custom sheath is assembled from 0.080 Kydex and has a piggy-back nylon sheath on the front for holding a multi-tool or whatever you want.

Here are the details:

  • Overall length of the knife:  10-1/8” approximately
  • Blade material:  High carbon Damascus steel
  • Blade hardness:  62 HRC
  • Blade length: 5.5”
  • Blade thickness:  0.25”
  • Blade finish:  Acid etched, coated with a boiled linseed oil mixture and then finally coated with oil.  The photos of the blades wherein they look “wet” are actually showing the oil.
  • Handle Material:  Black canvas micarta
  • Handle length:  4-7/8”
  • Handle thickness:  7/8” approx..
  • Weight of knife:  12.1 oz
  • Sheath material: 0.080 Black Kydex
  • Sheath mounting – quick belt attachment points, rivets are on 0.75” centers allowing for the use of a wide variety of mounting points including large Tek-Loks, Molle-Loks or even strapping via paracord
  • Knife retention:  Friction and a nylon strap with snap fastener
  • Weight of sheath assembly including piggyback sheath:  7.8 oz
  • Total weight of knife and sheath:  1lb 3.8oz

Since this is high carbon steel and not stainless, you will need to keep it oiled.  If you want to remove any scratches, use a solvent to remove the oil first and then the coloring can be restored with either warm apple cider vinegar or ferric chloride.  The dark color you see was created with a ferric chloride (70%)and apple cider vinegar (30%) mix heated to 90F degrees.  The acid is then washed off, the water removed with WD40 and two light coats of boiled linseed oil are applied to give it the aged look.  Once the BLO has dried, the blade is still brushed with clean engine oil.

Also, if you move any of the fasteners, be sure to use a medium strength threadlocker, such as blue medium Loctite, to secure the screws.  I did apply a some threadlocker to all screws just in case so use a screw driver or bit that fully engages the screws so you don’t damage the heads.  All screws are 8-32 thread.
